Opinions on the joint EMLex summer term 2021 in Santiago de Compostela

A big thank you to all professors and our lovely coordinator Majo, who all made our summer semester possible despite the extraordinary circumstances!

– Sölve Lorentzen

Because of the coronavirus our 2nd semester was not as planned, but most teachers and guest lecturers coped with this situation really well. The classes were interesting and informative with many interactive tasks. I like the fact that there is a possibility to choose 6 out of 10 modules due to the scientific preferences and nothing is obligatory. The location of USC is amazing, Santiago de Compostela is a small town with a nice atmosphere, so after hours of studying it’s great to wander around the old downtown.

Opinons on the EMLex

Given the occasion of my graduation from EMLex, I would like to take this
chance to thank the Consortium for giving me the opportunity to be a part of
this programme. Looking back at my motivation prior to embarking on this
journey, I can contentedly say that my expectations were not only met, but
rather I have gained much more in terms of specialised knowledge,
professional networking, life experiences and friendships, all of which I shall
cherish forever. Indeed, I feel quite privileged to have met the members of the
Consortium and my Cohort, to have lived in a city as beautiful as Budapest,
and for our common gatherings in Roma and Göttingen.

Michail Feidias

Within 2 years of the EMLex studies, I have gained lexicographical knowledge, I have improved my German and I have learnt a lot about European culture. I also met a lot of nice people during this time. The foreign language skills of the EMLex students are one of the biggest reasons, why they have good chances to get jobs, which require experiences abroad and certain soft skills.
– Shao Jianan, China

Being an EMLex student is a privilege. It is not estimable how much the programme has given me in terms of knowledge, skills, human relations.

Today, more than ever, the world needs lexicographers: in an age when the news are fake and the truth is post, lexicography is a beacon capable of clarifying the often-intentional ambiguity of words. And the European Master in Lexicography (EMLex) ensures that its future is in good hands. The programme is absolutely innovative; in fact, a degree in lexicography does not exist at any university. EMLex has the great merit of bringing  together students and teachers among the best in the field from all over the world promoting the collaboration between the academic world and the private sector: in addition to the numerous university seminars, EMLex students benefit from meeting the most prestigious publishing houses of the countries involved in the programme.

Personally, I studied in Nancy (France) and Erlangen (Germany) and I keep precious memories of both stays. My home university was Nancy where, under the masterful direction of Éva Buchi, I had the chance to share with my colleagues many moments of leisure: lunches, parties, recreational-cultural initiatives, weekly training in view of the spring marathon, picnics in the park and out-door trips alleviated the periods of intense study.

I fondly remember all the people I met during my EMLex who contributed to making it wonderful. I will always be grateful to my gorgeous EMLex family!

By educating lexicographers, [EMLex is] something new to the market place.

CiTIUS experience: “My internship at CiTIUS has been a great opportunity to practice my Spanish and translation skills. My task consisted in evaluating machine translation systems and compiling an English-Spanish dictionary of phrases verbs. Even though I stayed there several months only, CiTIUS staff treated me as a team member and was ready to help me at any time, if I had difficulties or problems. I was also able to select my own timetable, which is quite useful when you are doing your internship during the semester. Totally recommended!”

– Olha Novikova, Ukraine, Spain, Poland, Germany

The semester in Katowice was a combination of new friendships and intensive studies. An unforgettable time!

– Wiebke Schulte, Erlangen, Kattowic

EMLex common semester has been the most unusual semester of my life! New modules every week. New teachers and guest lecturers from all over the world to spend this week with us and to share their lexicographical and personal experiences. Lots of intercultural activities that united both students and professors into a big and friendly EMLex family.

– Olha Novikova, Ukraine, Spain, Poland, Germany

The semester in Katowice in my opinion can best be described as an excellent international learning experience, about lexicography first and foremost, but also with opportunities to enhance communication skills in various languages, including Polish, and the feeling of studying in an interesting and dynamic city.

– Martina Forstner, Austria, Spain, Poland, Germany

Teamwork and presentations, multicultural discoveries and travelling, papers and plunging into the world of lexicography – these are keywords to describe of our common semester in Katowice 2017.

– Olha Morys, Ukraine, Portugal, Poland, Germany

Lexicography is a subject which I suspect has to be loved in order to be studied. And this year’s students are extraordinarily interested and commited. It was a pleasure to work with them.

– Dominik Brückner, EMLex lecturer  at the IDS Mannheim about the second semester students

A  great group of intelligent students, a variety of different cultures, engaging discussions, on society, lexicography, terminology – a complex subject offering a lot of potential for discussion about the past and the present. All of this took place in an international atmosphere with all of its nice peculiarities, in German and English and on a demanding level. Erasmus Mundus has made this possible. I am proud and happy to be able to convey European curricula and to reflect critically on the educational content together with the students. I would also like to thank the organizers in Katowice.

– Stefan Schierholz, EMLex lecturer in Erlangen, about the second semester students

It is a group of highly enthusiastic and critical students who have a solid knowledge basis from their first semester. Because the group is multilingual, i.e. they have an excellent command of English and German, alongside their respective native language(s), a broad range of linguistic approaches and lexicographical issues are highlighted,  which are a source of great enrichment. They enjoy scientific discussions and learning! It has been a pleasure!

Conclusions of the 2016/18 EMLex students after their first semester

„The lectures are fairly easy to understand and the professors are friendly and helpful. ”

„Die Lerneinheiten sind sehr interessant und nützlich, die Professoren sind hilfsbereit, ich freue mich, dass ich EMLex gewählt habe.”

„For me EMLex program has been a unique opportunity to plunge into a new field tightly connected to my previous studies and professional aspirations, to get vital intercultural experiences and to master a new foreign language (Spanish).”

„The first semester of EMLex provided me with a truly rewarding international learning experience in the context of a highly challenging programme towards an exciting professional career.”

„Das erste Semester im EMLex war anstrengend und abwechslungsreich: eine richtige Herausforderung, die ich angenommen und damit viel Neues gelernt habe. ”

„The first semester of the EMLex programme was a great enriching lexicographical immersion.”

Azra Hayat-Vautrin, Université de Lorraine, Sarmiento-Kohorte (2013-2015)

„My favourite thing about the programme was the international aspect. I very much appreciated being a part of  a small cosmopolitan year group that allowed for a pleasant atmosphere. I really enjoyed the possibility to develop myself in a master’ s programme where the students are dedicated to their studies: we were really encouraged to develop our critical mindset. Also, this programme doesn’ t force its students to take a specific career path!”

Louis Albrecht, Université de Lorraine, Sarmiento-Kohorte (2013-2015)

„I very much appreciated the interaction with the foreign students who studied the same programme as us at other European universities. EMLex has allowed me to travel abroad more, to aquire profound methodological knowledge, to improve my English skills and of course to deepen my knowledge about lexicography – a field that has always intrigued me (even though I didn’ t know that term existed!)”

Márcia Afonso, Universidade do Minho, Sarmiento-Kohorte (2013-2015)

“I haven’ t regretted my choice to study EMLex for even one second. I chose the programme driven by the challenge to engage myself in the subject of dictionaries and their recent developments, by the attraction that language represents, by the programmes international spirit and by the chance to intern at a renowned publishing company in Portugal. All things considered, I would say that EMLex is a demanding, but comprehensive programme.

Marie André, Université de Lorraine, Sarmiento-Kohorte (2013-2015)

„I haven’ t regretted for a second to have chosen EMLex! I was able to intern in an affiliated company (MVS Publishing Solutions) and I loved it. Prior to this experience, I had no idea of what it could be like to work as a lexicographer in a company. Now I know that this is what I would like to do, even though these jobs aren’ t easy to find.
